Working on the Costa del Sol

If you are planning on working on the Costa del Sol, you’ll be happy to know that there are many jobs here for foreigners. With its growing economy, Southern Spain is always searching for people with language and/or technical skills. Most if not all qualifications that you have attained in your home country will be recognized in Spain. Please note this applies for qualifications attained within the EU.
 
Before being able to work in Spain, you will require an N.I.E. number. The relevant paperwork can be obtained in nearest national police station.
 
With your N.I.E. number, you are ready to start working in Spain. Generally, when starting to work, your employer will offer you are temporary contract of 3, 6, or 9 months. With an employee contract you are entitled to all the same benefits and legal protections as a native Spaniard.
 
From your wages you can expect certain deductions to be made which include national insurance, tax and social security. Once you temporary contract has expired your employer will either renew it on an indefinite basis or your will part company. Please note, an employer cannot simply continue renewing a short-term contract.
 
An alternative would be to become self-employed. Permits can be obtained from the local town hall. You will have to register for tax and National Insurance. You will also need to prove that you have employer’s liability insurance to legally hire staff.
 
For someone looking to set-up there own business there are a variety of businesses for sale. Many expats choose to open or take over existing bars & restaurants. But there are a large variety of options in the South of Spain.
