Should you wish to receive your social security card, will need to apply at your local social security office. If you are already working though, your employer can apply for your social security card or if you are self employed you can hire a gestor to do the work for you. Once you have applied, it will take several months for you to receive the card.
In the meantime though you will be issued with a temporary card which is sufficient to register with a doctor. Please note, if you pay Spanish social security contributions you and your family are entitled to free or subsidised medical treatment at your local Heath centre (Centro de Salud)
At the Health Centre you’ll find that most of the doctors have rudimentary English and will be able to help you with your problems. It is recommended though that if your not confident in your Spanish, that a Spanish speaking friend accompany you. They will also be able to help with the short form that you’ll have to fill out. The same rules apply for the local hospitals. Though there are usually several translators on hand.
If you do not qualify to receive social security medical care you must arrange private health insurance. If you wish to become a permanent resident of Spain you must be able to show proof that you have a private healthcare scheme if you are not contributing to Spanish social security.
If you have paid regular social security contributions in an EU country for two years prior to your arrival on the Costa del Sol, you may be entitled to healthcare for a limited period from your last payment. You must make arrangements and obtain the relevant forms in your home country before arriving in Spain.
