One of the most interesting and active ways of exploring Spain is on the back of a bicycle. The whole country is a Mecca for all sorts of bike related activities. In the North there is the famous pilgrimage route which invites to shorter rides lasting a couple of hours, to more strenuous rides lasting over several days.
PWith all its high mountains and deep valleys, it is no wonder the country has attracted mountain bike enthusiasts from all over the world. It has also become a very popular sport among the Spanish. One of the most popular places is La Manga, where you also find La Manga Club which is nestled on a mountain side between the Mediterranean and Mar Menor, this area has a very unique starting point especially for bikers and all other types of mountain sport.
You can rent bicycles to fit any experience level and budget, so that you are set whether you are off on just a short easy ride or going extreme mountain biking. Bicycling is a very active and exciting way of exploring Spain, and it is a way that can easily suit the whole family with a little consideration.
One of the most popular biking routes on the Costa del Sol, is Vias Verdes, which used to be an old railway line and now has been redesigned as a bicycle/ hiking route. Since 1993 over 7000 Km of old and unused railway network have been redesigned with the bikes and hikers in mind, and more are constantly being added. These routes are broken down into smaller routes that are between 10 and 100km long. These routes are not very demanding and there are no steep hills, so they can easily be recommended to hikers, horse riders, and even wheelchair users.
