How to apply for your NIE number in Spain

First and foremost what is NIE? The letter NIE are an abbreviation of Numero de Identidad de Extranjero (Identification number for foreigners). Similar to a passport number this help differentiate each individual regardless of how many other people might have a similar or identical name. Furthermore it allows the Hacienda (Spanish tax authorities) to keep a fiscal record on each non-resident who owns a property and other financial dealings in Spain.

Costa del Sol property and NIE numbers

If you intend to buy a property on the Costa del Sol, or anywhere in Spain for that matter, an NIE number is required when you sign the escritura (title deeds) before the notary public.

It is worth noting that as if you are applying for an NIE number here in Spain, it is worth doing as soon as possible as it can take a while before you receive it. The time is takes can vary from a few days to a few weeks, so better being safe than sorry.

Applying for the NIE in person

There are two methods of applying for an NIE in Spain. The first option is applying in person. You can apply directly for an NIE at the nearest national police station along the Costa del Sol where you will need to complete a short form. This option can be off-putting for many, as knowledge of Spanish is generally needed to communicate with staff and to complete the form.

Although many towns such as Fuengirola have volunteers to help non-Spanish speakers. Should you wish to do it yourself, it is recommended that you arrive at the police station early to avoid lengthy queues. Also there are only so many tickets available, so if you not early enough you might have to try again the next day. Please remember to take your passport along with a photocopy.

Remember to take you passport as well as 2 photocopies and several passport size photos. They may also request to know the reason for the application, so if it is because you a purchasing a property, including the paperwork. You will also be expected to hand in 2 Solicitud de NIE (application forms).

If you are a non-EU citizen, you will also need to include EU/Spanish visa or entry documents

After application, you will be given a receipt and should be able to pick up your NIE number approximately 1 to 3 weeks later. Please note, if you are unable to be in Spain for the pick up, whom ever has the receipt can pick it up on your behalf.

Third party applying for your NIE in Spain

Should you be unable to apply yourself for the NIE number due to other obligations, you can authorise a third party to apply on your behalf. If this is the case you will need to give authorisation before a notary public here in Spain. In most cases you would give the power of attorney to your lawyer as they would then be able to not only apply for your NIE number but any further documentation for the purchase of your property.
